Lower Fees Open Door to Licensure for More Midwives
Midwife
In response to continuing feedback regarding high fees being the primary barrier to licensure for Oregon midwives, the Oregon Health Licensing Agency (OHLA) and Board of Direct Entry Midwifery are reducing licensing fees effective April 1, 2010.

The lower fees are possible due to a substantial ending balance of the board budget for fiscal year 2007-2009. However, depending on ongoing and potential costs involved in overseeing licensing and regulation of midwifery, OHLA hopes to gain an additional minimum of 30 new licensees to provide stable, ongoing funding for the board's operation.

The application fee for new applicants is being reduced from $500 to $150 and the licensing fee from $1900 for two years to $630 annually for a total savings of $990 for new applicants and $640 for renewal applicants over a two-year period.

Assessing Risks of Certain Home Births
Midwife
Should Oregon's licensed midwives deliver all types of births in the home setting? If so, are current regulatory requirements enough to protect mother and baby? And how much information should be required to be communicated on any risks associated with home births?

The Board of Direct Entry Midwifery, one of 10 volunteer citizen boards and councils overseen by the Oregon Health Licensing Agency (OHLA), is addressing these issues and more in a series of sub-committee meetings scheduled through the end of April.
