Results of the 2002 Triennial Survey

Results of the 2002 Triennial SurveyThe drought had a definite impact on where, when and how often people boated in Oregon in 2001. This fact is evident throughout the newly released 2002 Boating In Oregon Triennial Survey Results.

Every three years, the Marine Board surveys owners of registered boats to identify where and how these boats are used and to learn about boaters' experiences and their opinions of boating safety, facilities and law enforcement on waterways throughout the state. The results of these surveys help the Board to better understand boaters' needs and the problems they encounter. This information helps to guide the agency's expenditures, programs and policies.
Some things the survey tells us:
  • Average age of boat owner: 54
  • Percentage of boats with more than one operator: 59%
  • Percentage of boats with outboard motors: 64%
  • Average number of days a boat is used in Oregon: 26.
  • Number of boaters using a substitute waterbody because of drought: 16,749.
  • Average repair cost for damage caused by low water: $613.
  • Estimated number of boats stolen: 1,528.
