1999 Boat Registrations Expire Jan. 1 - Renew Now

January 1, 2000, is fast approaching, a date that marks the end of a century, the beginning of a new millennium -- and re-registration time for many of Oregon's boaters.

The Oregon State Marine Board, Oregon's recreational boating agency, registers boats on a two-year cycle. Beginning this January, about half of Oregon's registered boats will need to be re-registered, replacing the old "99" decals with "01" decals.

"We encourage people to send in their registration renewal promptly so they don't miss any boating opportunity in the spring when the weather gets nice," said Randy Henry, of the Marine Board. Each spring and summer, tens of thousands of boaters end up in a last-minute rush because they didn't register their boat in the winter when there was plenty of time.

If you don't already have them, boat registration forms and a list of fees are available at the Marine Board web site, www.osmb.state.or.us, or by calling the Marine Board at (503) 378-8587. In addition, many boating retailers and some sporting goods stores serve as boat registration agents and can provide local assistance.

Registration fees are used to improve recreational boating throughout Oregon through facility improvements, law enforcement and education.
