McKenzie River Blockage Poses Risk to Boaters

Boaters on the McKenzie River should avoid boating the section of river adjacent to Hwy 126 milepost 44.5 where the river has become completely blocked by fallen trees. The tangle could ensnare a boat, forcing it under water or capsizing it, according to the Oregon State Marine Board.

"This sounds like a potentially life-threatening hazard for boaters," said Randy Henry, of the Marine Board. "According to Lane County Sheriff Marine Patrol, boaters should avoid this stretch of river at all cost until the hazard is cleared." Officials hope to have the blockage cleared soon. Boaters are advised to scout the area thoroughly before passing through to make sure the hazard is clear.

Boaters on all Oregon rivers should be wary of fallen trees this time of year. Wet soils and erosion can force large trees and debris into the river at any time, creating life-threatening hazards instantly. "It's critical that boaters be prepared and wear their life jackets at all times," said Henry. "A fallen tree can dump a boat far quicker than you can reach for a life jacket and put it on. Also, waters are very cold now and life vests protect against hypothermia. You're needlessly risking your life if you choose to not wear it."
