Boating Access Projects ApprovedMarine Board Approves $1.75 million In Access GrantsThe Oregon State Marine Board approved $1.74 million to help build and improve boating access facilities across the state. In a separate action, the Board also adopted a new speed limit on a portion of the Clatskanie River in Clatskanie, and elected a new chair for the Board. The action came during the Marine Board meeting in Newport on Tuesday, July 10. Clatskanie River Speed Limit AdoptedThe new speed limit reduces boat traffic to “5 mph slow-no-wake” from a point 100 yards downstream from the floating railroad bridge and ending at the Olson Road bridge. The speed limit was requested by petitioners to protect public safety and property. The regulation went into effect Wednesday, July 11. New Member, New ChairThe Board welcomed new board member Bob Montgomery, of Cascade Locks. He replaces outgoing Board member Nancy Hungerford, who has served on the board since 1993. Montgomery served as District 56 State Representative from 1995 to 2001. He is an avid boater, a former manager of the Port of Cascade Locks and also served in the U.S. Coast Guard. Court Boice, of Gold Beach, was elected by fellow board members to act as Board chair. Boice has been a board member since 1996. Board member Jim Whitty, of Coquille, was elected vice chair. Facility Grants ApprovedApproved boating access projects include boat ramps, floats, toilets, transient tie-up docks, fuel stations and pumpout facilities across the state. They will be put in place during the next two-year budget cycle. Applicants requested funding for 69 projects seeking over $8 million in Marine Board funds. A total of 28 requests were approved for a total of $1.74 million. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife provided an additional $700,000 in federal Sport Fish Restoration Motorboat Access funds to the pot. Total value of the projects, including matching funds, exceeds $3.95 million. Grant funds come from state boat registration and titling fees, fuel taxes, as well as federal Clean Vessel Act and Boating Infrastructure Grant funds.
