Jackson County Marine Law Enforcement Program Honored

The Oregon State Marine Board (OSMB) bestowed law enforcement awards to counties throughout the state at a recent meeting in Bend.

Jackson County Sheriff’s Deputy Jimmy Gyllenskog received the Award of Excellence for Boating Under the Influence of Intoxicants (BUII) Enforcement, as he successfully made 57 BUII arrests. This is Gyllenskog’s second consecutive year receiving this award. Gyllenskog is also extremely active in the DUII program.

Deputy Tom Turk received the Award for Making an Outstanding Contribution to Oregon’s Marine Law Enforcement Program as a member of OSMB instructor cadre. Deputy Turk provided many years of service as a member of the Marine Board instructor cadre. He provided leadership and instruction in the areas of marine theft investigation, BUII enforcement, boat maintenance and repair.

Sergeant Pat Rowland received the award for maintaining an Excellent Marine Enforcement Program in Jackson County. Sergeant Rowland received this award because of his superior support of the statewide program through training and cooperation with the OSMB. Jackson County provides up to six instructors each year at the Oregon Marine Law Enforcement Academy, to drift boat operations, whitewater operation school and provide maintenance and repair support to the statewide fleet.

“These awards are given to recognize top performance. To give credit to officers who reach above and beyond the requirements,” said Bill Rydblom, Law Enforcement Program Manager for the OSMB. “People’s lives are directly affected by the actions of these officers.”

Other awards announced during the meeting include: Award of Excellence: Most Improved Program, to Curry County; Public Safety Officer Life Saving Award, to Deputy Jess Stennett, Klamath County; Public Safety Officer Life Saving Award, to Deputy Pete York, Klamath County; Public Safety Officer Life Saving Award, to Senior Trooper Don Frerichs, Oregon State Police SW Region; Award of Excellence: Trooper of the Year, to Senior Trooper Marshall Maher, Oregon State Police NW region.
