Marine Board Receives Boating Grants

Immediate Release

The Oregon State Marine Board received close to $3 million in grants from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Boating Infrastructure Grant (BIG) program that will be used on projects in Multnomah, Lane and Columbia counties.  Oregon was one of eight states to receive the grants.  Money for the program comes from the Sport Fish Restoration and Boating Trust Fund supported by excise taxes, paid by boaters, on certain fishing, boating equipment and boat fuels.

These grants help to improve recreational boating facilities, while enhancing access to recreational, historic, cultural, natural and scenic areas for boaters.

Oregon was awarded grant funds for three large projects:
  • M. James Gleason transient tie-up and wave wall in Portland –project will replace the wave wall and relocate the existing transient tie-up space for greater boating access. The project is valued at $1,282,500.
  • Maple Street transient tie-up in Florence –project will replace the aging transient docks located in the historic waterfront of Old Town.  Approximately 270 feet of new concrete floats will be constructed to provide transient boaters access to this popular area. The project is valued at $850,000.
  • Sandy Beach boat launch on Government Island in the Columbia River –This grant completes the funding package for a new transient tie-up facility.  The new facility will include more than 1,000 feet of internal and external tie-up space, composting restroom and walking trails.  The total project is valued at $2,246,000.

“Big projects like these are done in funding phases,” says Janine Belleque, Grants and Contracts Coordinator for the Marine Board.  “Some projects take several years and several grant cycles to complete, but when the project is finished there’s such a sense of accomplishment.  It’s exciting when different groups of people partner together to build a facility that can be used for years by boaters.”
