Law Enforcement to Train on the Rogue River

During the week of August 23, the Oregon State Marine Board will be conducting law enforcement drift boat operations along various stretches of the Rogue River.
“This is the largest class we’ve ever conducted,” says Tony Van Meter, Law Enforcement Coordinator for the Oregon State Marine Board. There are over 18 drift boats and 24 students enrolled from Oregon State Police, County Sheriff ’s Offices and the Department of Fish and Wildlife.
“The agenda is packed, using every minute of the training schedule,” Van Meter adds. “Students will learn the river and how to read the water, participate in rescue operations, and will learn the fundamentals of operating a drift boat like pivoting, ferrying angles and proper push, pull, and cross-strokes, by actually doing it.”
Training operations will be running from Shady Cove to Dodge Park on August 23, Cole Rivers Hatchery to Shady Cove on August 24, Dodge Park to Touvelle State Park on August 25 and Ennis Riffle to Argo on August 26.
“Boaters and anglers should be aware of congestion on the river stretches where we’re training,” says Van Meter. “In-water training is very important, not only for the students but the people who recreate on the river.”
