Douglas County Deputy Honored with Tom Rice Award

For Immediate Release

Douglas County Marine Deputy Pete Wood was honored by the Oregon State Marine Board recently with a special award for his service as a training instructor working to improve the skills of marine officers across the state.

The Tom Rice Instructor award is given to an instructor who displays the character of the man whose name appears on the award.  “Patience, kindness, knowledge, talent, experience, and a willingness to help others become better at what they do.  This is the very definition of the character of Deputy Wood,” said Tony Van Meter, Law Enforcement Coordinator for the Marine Board. “The boat wheel was chosen for the award because it symbolizes the role instructors’ play in guiding fellow Marine Law Enforcement officers through the difficult jobs we ask them to perform.  Deputy Wood has been instrumental in the effectiveness of our law enforcement training program.”

The award is named after the late Tom Rice, who was a well-liked and respected marine deputy who served Josephine County and the Marine Board for years.  He was killed in a helicopter accident while on duty in 2002.

The first recipient of the “Tom Rice Instructor Award” was Josephine County Deputy Ernie Fields.  In 2005, Coos County Deputies Will Coleman and Doug Strain shared the award.
