SEATTLE - The Coast Guard is issuing a warning to boaters that a hazard to navigation exists at the Chetco River entrance.

Submerged line from derelict crab pots are floating below the surface of the water on the south side of the Chetco River entrance. The south side has become a navigational risk and could place mariners in danger if they transit across the submerged line. The line is not visible and the amount of line is unknown. Position of the crab pot line is 42 02.63N 124 16.25W. Vessel/Mariners are reminded to stay on Range and do not cut across the South Portion of the Bar.

The line has entangled two pleasure craft's props in the past week, disabling their lower outboard drives. A 47-foot response boat crew from Station Chetco River towed both vessels in across the Chetco River Bar. The Chetco River entrance is very narrow and does not leave much room for error giving mariners little time to react if something happens on the bar.

Station Chetco River is located approximately seven miles north of the Oregon-California border. The station was originally established in 1961, and is within one quarter mile of the bar and river mouth. The port area maintains about 900 moorings for commercial and sport fishing vessels. Chetco River is oriented north/south with the mouth facing almost due south and protected by Chetco Point from most westerly seas and storms.

During the summer months Station Chetco River operates Search & Rescue
Detachment Rogue River, a seasonal detachment located in Gold Beach,
Oregon.
