Deschutes County Marine Patrol Volunteer Honored
The Oregon State Marine Board honored law enforcement and volunteers from across the state at their annual post season conference on October 17, in Bend.  Paul Cody, who volunteers with the Deschutes County Marine Patrol, was recognized with the Don Christensen Volunteer of the Year award.

The award is named for the late Don Christensen who served as a marine deputy, then Board Member and volunteer with the mandatory boater education program. This award represents dedication to safety, education and community involvement.

Paul Cody began his retirement by volunteering as a proctor for the Marine Board’s mandatory education program in 2001.  As his experience and comfort increased, Cody expanded the equivalency exam option to local Joe’s stores.  Cody then approached the Deschutes County Marine Patrol for volunteer opportunities, and quickly carved himself a niche.  “He’s there whenever we need him, and it turns out, we need him pretty often,” said Corporal Neil Mackey from the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office.  “Whether it’s for helping deputies with boat operations or pulling stumps out of the water, Paul is always willing.”

Cody assisted the Deschutes County Marine Patrol with 834 boat examinations, helped issue 41 warnings, helped conduct 20 hull inspections and donated 954 volunteer hours.  This enabled the Marine Patrol to move onto other functions.  Mackey added, “He’s been an asset to helping educate boaters and help them get their boater education cards in our area.”
