One-of-a-Kind Powerboating Course Offered for Women

For Immediate Release

A free, two-part education and hands-on training is being offered for women interested in learning how to safely operate a powerboat.  The class portion is being offered Saturday, June 23 at 8 a.m. at True Form RV and Marine, 2730 NE Bunn Rd. in McMinnville.  The on-the-water portion will take place on different dates, based on the number of students attending.

“In this day and age, women want to do more than just ride in boats,” says MariAnn Koloszar, Education Coordinator for the Oregon State Marine Board.  “It’s important to have more than one person know how to operate a boat, and we often hear of women wanting to learn more, but feel there aren’t enough ‘hands-on’ opportunities to learn in a safe, controlled environment.  It’s no fun having to learn the hard way –during an emergency.”

Instructor/Captain Bob Kelso formed his own training course that incorporates the Marine Board’s Boat OregonA Course on Responsible Boating, with a “hands-on” learning experience that allows students to operate a boat in the water.  During this training, students will also gain valuable experience in trailering and launching a boat, docking, maneuvering, anchoring and practicing emergency procedures.  “This training is specifically offered to women because there are so few opportunities out there on powerboats,” says Kelso.

Students will also get to hear from two guest speakers, Captain Deborah Horan of Sea Tow and Captain Bruce Hebeler, Instructor for the US Coast Guard approved license training.  Both have extensive experience boating in local waters and facing challenges of on-the-water emergencies.
For more information and to pre-register for the course, call Captain Bob Kelso at True Form RV and Marine (503) 474-4542 or (503) 887-0899. Email bobk@trueformrv-marine.com.
