Marine Board to Hold Public Hearing for Proposed Regulations on the Lower Willamette River
The Oregon State Marine Board will hold a public hearing on May 13, at Clackamas Community College, Wilsonville Training Center room 111/112, located at 29353 Town Center Loop East, in Wilsonville. The hearing will begin promptly at 6 p.m. and end at approximately 8 p.m. Everyone will have an opportunity to speak. Wakeboarders, homeowners and other interested parties are encouraged to attend the hearing.
The Marine board is proposing a “congestion zone” designation on the Willamette River from river mile 31.5 at the upper end of Willow Island (near Canby) to the Highway 219 Bridge at river mile 48.5, and a slow-no-wake zone between the I-5 Bridge at river mile 38 to the railroad bridge immediately upriver. Within the congestion zone, boats pulling recreational devices such as wakeboards, water skis and inflatable toys, would be prohibited from operating within 200 feet behind other boats pulling recreational devices, must operate at least 100 feet away from docks, and must avoid power-on “u-turns” or figure eights.
The Marine Board is also accepting written public comment on the proposed rules beginning May 1. All comments must be received by Saturday, May 31. Comments can be sent to June LeTarte, OSMB, P.O. Box 14145, Salem, OR 97309. They can also be sent via email to osmb.rulemaking@state.or.us, or via fax (503) 378-4597. Comments by telephone cannot be accepted.
