| Second North Santiam River Navigation Hazard Cleared |
|
For Immediate Release

The buzz saws were humming for a better part of last Thursday to clear a large cottonwood tree that spanned across the North Fork Santiam River near its confluence with the South Santiam River.
“The root wad of this tree was at least 12 feet high or more,” said Dale Flowers, Law Enforcement Coordinator for the Marine Board. “It took a lot of people, equipment and a lot of skill to remove this hazard. We had to do something because someone inexperienced about the river was going to get seriously hurt,” Flowers added.
David Neal, owner of Agricultural Drainage Corporation, donated his time, equipment and fuel to help remove this hazard. With the help from the Marion County marine patrol, Jefferson Fire and Rescue, and representatives from the Western Whitewater Association, after more than five hours of labor, rigging, cutting, and pulling, were able to move the main portion of the tree along the river bank. Portions of the tree that were sawed off were allowed to drift downstream for fish habitat.
“We couldn’t have mitigated the river hazard if all these folks hadn’t come together to help make it happen,” said Flowers. The Marine Board also wants to extend its gratitude to the North Santiam River Guides Association for reporting hazards to navigation to us and to marine law enforcement.
