For Immediate Release - 10/20/09
The Oregon State Marine Board honored marine law enforcement officers from around the state for their outstanding performance and contributions during the 2009 boating season at their annual post-season conference on October 13, in Bend.
Sergeant Cliff Harold and Deputies Jon Bock and Jeff Woodford of the Lane County Marine Patrol received several awards during the evening ceremony.
On August 22, 2009, Deputy Jon Bock and Reserve Deputy Jeff Woodford had just finished freeing a jet boat that had grounded on the McKenzie River when two canoes capsized near the recovery team. The two sprang into water-rescue mode and headed toward the victims. Two men were trapped in a snag, and fortunately, one victim was able to make it to shore. The Deputies accurately deployed their throw bags to the second victim, who was able to catch the line to be pulled free from the snag and brought safely to shore. These Deputies received Life Saving Awards for being at the right place at the right time and using their life-saving skills. “The McKenzie and other valley rivers were inundated with snags, fallen trees and other hazards that kept law enforcement very busy this summer,” said Bill Rydblom, Law Enforcement Manager for the Marine Board. “Residents of Lane County can rest assured that their marine law enforcement worked very hard this season to make sure the waterways were safe for everyone to enjoy.”
Sergeant Cliff Harold was also recognized as the Program Manager of the Year. “Sergeant Harold’s excellent communication with the Marine Board about boating safety hazards on various river’s in Lane County, helped keep boater’s safe,” said Rydblom. “Sergeant Harold dispatched his Deputies to mitigate hazards, forwarded pictures and pertinent information to staff to post on the agency’s website or for news alerts, and has proven to be a real asset to the Marine Board and Lane County Sheriff’s Office.”
