Oregon State Police Receives Awards
For Immediate Release - 10/21/09

The Oregon State Marine Board honored marine law enforcement officers from around the state for their outstanding performance and contributions during the 2009 boating season at their annual post-season conference on October 13, in Bend.

The Oregon State Police (OSP) Northwest Region was recognized for the fourth year in a row for the efforts carried out by Senior Trooper Marshall Maher, who received Trooper of the Year.  Senior Trooper Brad Bennett and Sergeant Dean Perske of the Oregon State Police Southwest Region were also recognized for their “Outstanding Contributions” to the Marine Law Enforcement Training Program.

Senior Trooper Marshall Maher, stationed out of the Springfield office, conducted 262 boat examination reports, issued 31 citations and 98 warnings, conducted one hull identification inspection and arrested one operator for Boating Under the Influence of Intoxicants (BUII). In Oregon, a boat operator must fail field sobriety tests before being given a breath test under the state’s Implied Consent Law.  A limit of 0.08 percent or above immediately imposes stiff fines and loss of boating privileges.  “It’s amazing the difference one person can make,” said Bill Rydblom, Law Enforcement Manager for the Marine Board.  “Senior Trooper Maher’s consistency in law enforcement deserves recognition.”

Senior Trooper Brad Bennett, and Sergeant Dean Perske have assisted the Marine Board for many years at their annual Marine Law Enforcement Academy and Drift Boat and Jet Boat Schools.  Both were recognized with Special Instructor Awards.  “Their level of professionalism, interaction with students and helping them build confidence makes these two individuals really stand out,” said Dale Flowers, Law Enforcement Coordinator for the Marine Board.  “They are able to build confidence in officers new to boating, and able to do it under extremely challenging conditions.  This is a true talent.”  Flowers added, “OSP is fortunate to have two of the best boat operators in the state patrolling our waterways, and high quality instructors as well.”

Other awards presented during the conference included: Most Improved Yearly Program to Josephine County; Most Improved Seasonal Program to Morrow County; Program of the Year, Multnomah County Sheriff’s River Patrol; Program of the Year –Seasonal to Polk County; Education Award to, Klamath County Sheriff’s Office; Education Award –Seasonal Program to Washington County; Officer of the Year to Deputy Daren Krag, Klamath County; Seasonal Officer of the Year to Deputy Jerry Roley, Washington County Sheriff’s Office; Boating Under the Influence of Intoxicants Enforcement to Deputy Jason Denton, Jackson County Sheriff’s Office; Program Manager of the Year to Sergeant Cliff Harold, Lane County Sheriff’s Office; Program Manager of the Year -Seasonal to Deputy Adam Robb, Baker County Sheriff’s Office; Special Instructor Award to Deputy Steve Fandry, Lane County Sheriff’s Office and Sergeant Tom Turk, Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Rookie of the Year, Deputy Ken Berry, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office; Program Administration Award of Excellence to Clatsop County and Coos County Sheriff’s Offices; and Volunteer of the Year to John Zeman of Multnomah County Sheriff’s River Patrol.
