For Immediate Release -7/26/10
A public meeting to consider a proposed boating regulation on Siltcoos Lake is scheduled for Tuesday, August 3, in Florence. The proposed rule would permanently reduce speed on the Miller arm to 10 miles per hour.
The 10 mph speed limit was adopted as a temporary rule in April by the Board for implementation during the 2010 boating season at the request of the Lane County Sheriff's Ofifce. The request was based on the desire to improve safety for people who swim and paddle small craft in this section of water. The temporary rule would expire this fall and requires a public comment process and full agency review before considering a permanent rule.
The public meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at the Siuslaw Public Library in Florence, 1460 Ninth Street in the Bromley Room. Comments may be given orally or in writing. In addition, written comments are being accepted during the entire month of August and can be e-mailed to osmb.rulemaking@state.or.us, faxed to (503) 378-4597, or mailed to OSMB, PO Box 14145, Salem OR 97309.
The Board would like to hear from local residents, boaters, anglers and others who use the waterway if the reduced speed is prudent and necessary given current use patterns of the lake. If you have specific questions about the proposed rule, please contact Randy Henry, operations policy analyst for the Board, at (503) 378-2611. The Board is expected to consider the permanent rule at the October Board meeting in Bend.
